In my experience, trial and error ends up with a lot of error, and a lot of broken hearts. Most people are relatively uneducated on raising dogs to be even-tempered, happy, balanced members of society. There is a spectrum of dog training and dog care that most of us are unaware of. There will be people that will readily offer to educate you on various aspects of dog health and training from their position on that spectrum. The advice that others will give you may be coming from a professional, but it may or may not be in the best interest of the dog or your relationship with your dog. I think it is really important to learn what your options are so that you can thoughtfully and intentionally raise your dog, without any regrets.
